Carol grew up on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, Brazil seeing violence at home from her alcoholic father. She was molested as a child and suffered bullying and violence at school. Much later, after moving to the U.S and getting married, she became a victim of domestic violence and sought refuge in women’s shelters for two years.
Carol began to channel her anger into radical feminism until she learned of the rape of a relative. At that point her rage triggered a melt down that almost got her arrested, but made her realize she had to heal the ‘bombs’ in her heart by directing her efforts inward.
She told us that she was inspired by the portrayal of Adam and Ekhaya’s healing in our film CRAZYWISE along with a Buddhist meditation her mother had taught her as a young girl. She began studying Buddhist’s practices and doing silent meditation five hours a day even while holding down a job. Five months later she got in touch with us. Three weeks after that we met for this interview.
